Adams County Ohio -Definitely worth a visit to see the natural prairie areas and rich woodlands. "The Edge of Appalachia Preserve is one of the most biologically diverse collections of natural systems in the Midwestern U. S., encompassing rugged woodland, prairie openings, waterfalls, giant promontories and clear streams" (Nature Conservancy). :"The Edge of Appalachia provides critical habitat for some 100 rare species of plants and animals. Four areas in the preserve, Lynx Prairie, Buzzardroost Rock, Red Rock and the Wilderness, are registered National Natural Landmarks, testimony to their national significance. The eminent ecologist E. Lucy Braun first called attention to the biodiversity of "The Edge" in the 1920s. Her students, Richard and Lucile Durrell, were early leaders in the effort to preserve this outstanding natural area" (Cincinnati Museum Center).

Here, within Ohio’s largest privately owned protected natural area, visitors will find mixed mesophytic forests, flowering and medicinal plants, and Appalachian herbs like great rhododendron and Canby’s mountain-lover. Cerulean warblers and other neotropical birds abound during warmer months, while imperiled animals like the Indiana bat, green salamander and Allegheny woodrat persist throughout the year. All told, more than 100 rare plant and animal species make their home within the preserve system.

The Cincinnati Wildflower Preservation Society (CWFPS) The purpose of this society is the preservation of wildflowers through education, promoting awareness, and habitat preservation. There are seven monthly lecture programs each year from September through March, with guest speakers that are experts in their field. Topics range from wildflowers of this general area, to those of specialized areas, either near or far away, reviews of particular plant families worldwide, geology as related to plant distributions, and occasionally to the birds, bees, and butterflies that visit flowers and without which some of the species might perish. There are also field trips annually. CWFPS is not a garden club although some members are avid wildflower gardeners. Field trips provide opportunities to observe how wildflowers grow and this experience has enabled gardeners to succeed with some of the more demanding and even delicate plants.
